Middletown Police are investigating after a bag of dead puppies was found on Sunday.
Officers received a call just before noon from a resident about a bag of dead puppies that was found on the side of Preston Avenue.
Investigators said the four puppies were approximately two weeks old and were black in color with some white on their chin, chest and feet. The puppies were all male and appeared to be a possible poodle or cocker spaniel mixed breed.
According to police, the puppies were transported to Pieper-Olson Veterinary Hospital, where they were examined and stored until they could be transported to the lab for a necropsy to determine the cause of death. Officials estimate the puppies had been dead for a few hours.
Police said the puppies would have been too young to adopt and should have stayed with their mother.
Middletown Animal Control officers are investigating the death of the puppies. Police said they are processing evidence from the scene.
