U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire says an American citizen jailed in his native Lebanon since September on no charges is very ill and if he dies there, then Lebanon should be subject to sanctions.
Shaheen said at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Wednesday that documents provided by Amer Fakhoury’s lawyer “clearly indicate” he’s not the person that newspapers in Lebanon allege him to be.
The 57-year-old restaurant owner was once part of the South Lebanon Army and worked at a former prison described by human rights groups as a center for torture.
His family says he’s innocent.
