Man Shot in Mattapan Found Outside Dorchester Restaurant, Police Say

A man who was found outside of a Dorchester restaurant after being shot in front of a beauty salon in nearby Mattapan has life-threatening injuries, Boston police say.

Authorities responded around 4:15 p.m. Thursday to reports of a shooting at 160 Norfolk St. where the victim was found close to the Only One Jamaican Restaurant, which had yellow crime tape up around it.

Police say he was shot on Morton St. in Mattapan near the Upscale Beauty Salon, where a bullet hole could be seen in the window.

The continued violence in the Boston neighborhood has frustration mounting at businesses along Morton St.

Edward Evans of Pit Stop Barbecue said, “I heard the gunshots, and I just saw a bunch of people scrambling, and then the police came and an ambulance came.

Evans says he’s upset with the ongoing violence.

“You find these little crowds arguing and all that, you can’t be around them. Any given time, you know what I’m saying,” he said.

Lisette Santana of Morton’s Pizza said: “Nobody wants to come to work, and it’s like okay, maybe I might get shot today at my job, I’m here to make my money. Everyone is here for the same thing.

At Morton’s Pizza, three bullet holes are still visible from another shooting in July: one is in the window, another in the door, and a third in the counter.

“It’s just annoying because they need to do something, just don’t stand in the street and say we’re going to help you out, we’re going to find the people or protect the community, actually do something,” said Santana.

Pete Buttigieg Campaigns in New Hampshire After Indiana Event Disrupted

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg met with New Hampshire voters on Thursday, a day after his campaign event in Indiana was interrupted by a protester. The event was led by African American leaders to dispute the notion that the white mayor struggles with support from the black community in South Bend.

Buttigieg is often asked how his experience as a small-town mayor qualifies him to be president, but a more pressing concern is his support among African-Americans. Polls show Buttigieg has yet to make that critical connection.

When asked what he is specifically doing to attract African-American voters, Buttigieg responded, “Well first of all, substance, making sure that I explain our agenda for black Americans. But also engagement.”

On Thursday, Buttigieg received a significant endorsement from President Barack Obama’s former body man, Reggie Love, who said he sees many similarities between Buttigieg and Obama.

“Reggie Love, somebody who certainly has an understanding from his perspective of what the presidency requires,” Buttigieg said of the endorsement.

The endorsement comes one day after a South Bend event, designed to raise support among African-Americans, was interrupted by a white man and other “black lives matter“ protesters.

“We can’t control if somebody from another campaign comes and disrupts it, but what you saw, most importantly there, was a lot of folks speaking their truth,” Buttigieg said of the incident.

Buttigieg supporters are confident he will bridge the gap with African-Americans in the same way he has already exceeded expectations as a candidate.

“Once they get to know him, they’re going to be like, he’s got that Douglas plan, he’s really a person of the people,” said Stanley Horton, of Concord.

The Douglas plan is a proposal to dismantle racist structures and systems in the US. And New Hampshire supporters say there are other qualities about Buttigieg that voters of all races can appreciate.

“The fact that he’s young and he’s got energy and he’s going to bring calmness back to our country,” Horton said.

Buttigieg is digging into New Hampshire, with Thursday marking his 14th visit to the Granite State. He has two more events Friday.

Police Interview Reveals Defendant Claimed Self Defense in Murder of South Boston Doctors

The man accused of murdering two South Boston doctors told police he killed one of the victims in act of self defense, according to an interview played aloud at his double murder trial Thursday.

Bampumim Teixeira is on trial for the killings of Dr. Richard Field and Dr. Lina Bolanos. The engaged couple was found dead in their South Boston penthouse in May of 2017.

In an interview with Sergeant Detective Michael Devane, Teixeira said he was invited to the penthouse by Bolanos. He said he had an affair with her when he was a concierge in the building and blamed her death on Field, who he said came home and became enraged. Teixeira said he killed Field in an act of self defense.

“He said he was going to kill us both,” Teixeira whispered to police from his hospital bed.

The victims’ families shook their heads as they listened. The recording played right after gruesome testimony from the medical examiner.

Dr. Richard Atkinson testified that both victims died from stab wounds, but Bolanos had significantly more signs of trauma.

“There were 24 total sharp force injuries on all sides of her neck,” Dr. Atkinson said.

Dr. Atkinson also testified that there was bruising around the couples’ wrists, consistent with being bound or handcuffed.

A DNA expert also took the stand and testified that the couples’ blood was found all over the shirt Teixeira was wearing as well as on the kitchen knives that prospectors said he used to stab the doctors to death.

Teixeira’s attorney has yet to say if he will take the stand in his own defense. The judge said the jury could begin deliberating this case as early as Monday.

Protest to Stop Construction of Compressor Station Leads to Arrests

Dozens of residents of the South Shore of Massachusetts protested as construction began on a natural gas compressor station near the Fore River Bridge Thursday morning.

Four of the protesters, who blocked access to the work site, were arrested.

“This is a travesty; this never should have happened,” said Betsy Sowers of Weymouth. “We’re here to say that this is not acceptable, and we are in court, of course, trying to stop this project.”

In 2014, the Canadian-based company Enbridge announced plans to build the compressor station.

The station, which received final federal approval in November, will push gas from Pennsylvania to Canada.

Critics of the project have expressed concerns over contaminants in the ground.

In January, a study commissioned by the state found cancer-causing chemicals in the soil near the work site, but claimed the toxins weren’t harmful to anyone.

“It’s about a company — a multinational company — coming into a town and bulldozing their way through using their money and their influence,” said Ed Cowen of Weymouth.

Fore River Residents Against the Compressor Station, the grassroots group that organized the protest, said it will continue to try to stop the project.

“We will continue to fight it,” said Sowers.

Vt. Woman Welcomes Announcement of Impeachment Articles

A Vermont woman welcomed Thursday’s news that the U.S. House will move forward with articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, because she has a unique connection to the topic.

In March of 2017, when the president had only been in office a few months, Susan Ohanian formally urged her neighbors at Charlotte’s annual town meeting to ask Congress to look into removing Trump.

Ohanian’s argument at the time was that the president’s business dealings in the U.S. and overseas meant he could profit off the office.

“They applauded after the vote,” Ohanian said Thursday, remembering the passage of her Town Meeting Day motion that made people in Charlotte among the very first to take a public stance on impeachment.

Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her caucus would pursue articles of impeachment, believing the president abused his power and jeopardized national security in the way he talked with Ukraine’s leader.

“It’s heartbreaking, but the president gave us no choice,” the Democrat from California said.

Ohanian, an author and retired teacher, closely watched news reports of the announcement.

“I hope that the public can begin to see what’s really at stake so that it doesn’t just become the Democrats versus the Republicans,” Ohanian said Thursday. “That’s a real danger. There’s something very basic at stake here. And I’m not a Democrat.”

Noting she identifies as an Independent, Ohanian knows the next few weeks will likely be a divisive stretch, politically.

In a tweet Thursday, Trump called the Democrats the “do nothing, radical left,” and added that he thinks they have nothing to go on.

The president’s allies are rallying behind him.

“This is the weakest, the thinnest impeachment in the history of America,” Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California, the Republican House minority leader, said following Rep. Pelosi’s announcement.

Ohanian, reflecting on how she raised her voice early for impeachment, said Thursday we are in a critical moment for the country and Constitution — one she hopes Congress will treat with the utmost seriousness.

Worker Allegedly Blew Snow on Man’s Truck, Threatened Him With Knife

A Maine man has been arrested after pulling a knife in a disagreement over snow removal.

The parking lot at the Shaw’s grocery store location in Wiscasset was being cleared of snow Tuesday. That was when, according to police, a man went back to his truck and saw a worker blowing snow on it.

“One of the workers was blowing snow up against his truck. He asked him to stop, he kept doing it,” said Wiscasset Police Chief Larry Hesseltine.

At that point, the worker, 36-year-old Christopher Perkins, who is known to police, escalated the argument by allegedly drawing a knife and saying he’d “slit” the truck owner’s throat.

Police say Perkins even took the dispute a step further, saying he’d shoot the truck owner with a gun if he reported what happened.

The other man called police anyway. A sergeant arrived a short time later.

“He detected Mr. Perkins had been drinking and ultimately arrested him for violating bail conditions and threatening,” said Hesseltine.

Perkins has since posted bail and is scheduled to appear in court in January.
